Brave: Tomorrow's 'Monday Matinee' from Cinema Nairn

Pixar's view of Scottish history! Beautiful animation, together with the evocative voices of Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Robbie Coltrane, as well as the likes of Julie Walter and  Emma Thompson (to name just a few), tell the story of Princess Merida.  Determined to make her own path in life, she defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse.

Come behind the curtain after the film for a cuppa and home bakes, and chat about the film.

Kon Tiki - this Friday's film from Cinema Nairn

This year's November adventure film is the critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated Norwegian biopic Kon Tiki, which also won ‘Best Film’ at Inverness Film Festival. 

Based on the amazing 4000 mile Pacific raft journey of Thor Heyerdal in 1947, director Joachim Ronning’s beautifully filmed 2013 film stars Pal Hagen in the title role. As would be expected, the natural world produces some terrifying moments, but the boredom, cabin fever and interpersonal stresses are just as fascinating and believable.

The film, which is in English, will be shown at Nairn Community and Arts Centre on Friday 27th November at 7.30pm.  Doors open at 7:00.

Cinema Nairn brings yet another hidden gem to Nairn!  A gripping, highly acclaimed film from Poland.  Anna is a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland, on the verge of taking her vows, when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation.  (In Polish, with English subtitles).

Cinema Nairn's latest offering: 'The Navigator' with Buster Keaton - and Andy May on Piano!

'The Navigator' (1924) is one of Buster Keaton's most ambitious and inventive films. Set in a hugely impressive drifting liner, the lack of any coherent plot line was no barrier to the most amazing and hilarious series of watery gags and stunts, including some underwater sequences shot in the near freezing waters of Lake Tahoe.

Will Buster and his fiancee be rescued or captured by hostile natives? Dive into the Little Theatre on Saturday 5th September 10am to find out! Tickets at Book and Arts Festival outlets or on the door.

A Dangerous Game: Cinema Nairn's film this Friday

In 2012 Cinema Nairn presented Anthony Baxter's disturbing documentary about the Balmedie golf course near Aberdeen in the award winning 'You've Been Trumped'.  A Dangerous Game is the fascinating follow-up where Baxter return to Menie to see how things have gone since the course opened and further investigates the disturbing aspects of the development.  The film also looks at the broader context of luxury golf developments worldwide and at their impact on the often fragile environment of the area where they are constructed.

There is also an interview with Donald Trump, which no doubt will be very interesting!

Don’t miss Rocket Post, Cinema Nairn’s next film, on Friday 19th June 2015.

Sit back and relax amidst the beautiful Scottish scenery and enjoy this heart-warming 1930s tale of love and postal deliveries!  Filmed on Taransay in the Hebrides you’ll want to see this film over and over again.

Try to come early as we’ll be having a few sandwiches and nibbles to say farewell to two of our most loyal supporters, who are heading off to pastures new (but not as beautiful as Nairn!).  So doors will open early at 6:45pm, with tea, coffee and snacks, and a bar for you to buy some drinks.

Brighton Rock - the latest film, this Friday 15th May.

A homage to the late Richard Attenborough. In Graham Greene’s adaption of his own novel, Pinkie Brown (Attenborough)  runs a protection racket, but in trying to cover up the murder of one of his rivals, Pinkie’s behaviour gets more and more desperate.  A great British film for a British great!  

The Sapphires - Cinema Nairn's next film on Friday 17th April at 7:30pm.

Your chance to see the critical acclaimed film from 2012 that only had a limited airing at cinemas.  A really enjoyable true story of four young aboriginal girls who form a pop group to entertain the troops in Vietnam.  A film about love, friendship and war – with great music from the '60s.

Doors open at 7:00pm at the Nairn Community & Arts Centre, for a start at 7:30pm.

Come along to the Community Centre this Friday to see the latest offering from Cinema Nairn.  The synopsis could lead you to think this true story of a quadriplegic man and his wacky carer was one of tragedy and sadness.  But director (Oliver Nakache) turns it into an enriching story of human resilience with a great sense of humour and fantastic performances from the cast.  

Another hidden gem.  Don't let the subtitles put you off, this really is a film that everyone should see!

Gregory's Girl, the Cinema Nairn Matinee on Monday 16th March.

The 2nd Matinee of Cinema Nairn's 2015 season is on this Monday 16th March with one of the best films to come out of Scotland - ever!  

Yes, this is the wonderful film from Bill Forsyth starring John Gordon Sinclair, Dee Hepburn and Clare Grogan.  A must see for all film fans.  Come along to the Community Centre for this tale of young love in Cumbernauld!

And remember - tea and home bakes will follow the screening, and all for only £2.50!  Show starts at 2:00pm.

The Night of the Hunter - Cinema Nairn film this Friday 7:30pm

A film-noir thriller from director Charles Laughton, starring the great Robert Mitchum as a fake religious fanatic. He marries gullible widow (Shelley Winters) to get to her two children who know where their real daddy hid the loot from a heist.  Mitchum at his classic best!

Come along a see a very dark and scary performance from Robert Mitchum.  Doors open at 7:00pm for a wine and film starts at 7:30pm.  £5 entrance fee. Pay at the door.

CINEMA  NAIRN.  Fifth Annual Report  February 2015

 Programme.
In 2014 Cinema Nairn celebrated another very good year with nearly 900 attendances at the 15 films shown throughout the year.   Most popular of the evening showings was ‘Sunshine on Leith’ with an audience of 110, and a wee dram was served to celebrate (or otherwise) the Referendum result!    ‘Cool Runnings’ celebrated the Winter Olympics, while all four matinees attracted a large and loyal following, with many of the older generation rekindling fond memories of childhood cinema trips to see ‘Geordie’ and ‘The Maggie’.    For Nairn Book and Arts Festival there was standing room only at Charlie Chaplin’s  ‘The Circus’ which was part of the Festival’s children’s day. Andy May again did the honours brilliantly on piano.
Audience members were again invited to suggest films for future programmes, and several of the suggestions have been included in the programme.

Loyalty Cards
The loyalty card scheme remains popular, and we now feel we are establishing a regular audience which  gives us financial security, but more importantly, fulfils the original vision of community cinema, and seeing films with friends in your own community.  The matinees in particular have given some people a cinema experience which they have not had access to for many years, and the tea and baking remain very popular.

Funding
We did not apply for grant funding this year as the Scotmid grant from the previous year continued to support the matinees in 2014.  However we were very grateful to Nairn Book and Arts Festival for sharing some of the Davidson Trust sponsorship for the Children’s day film, as the licences to show some of these old films are very expensive, and we regretfully cannot normally afford to give children free entry.

Monday 7th December: Brave (2012) PG (95 mins)   2pm Matinee Set in a beautifully animated Scotland, in a rugged and mythical time, "Brave" features Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of royalty. Familiar voices and scenery make this a great way to spend a December afternoon!

Everyone is welcome to our showing of Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, at the Community Centre on Monday 1st December at 2:00pm. Great acting from a wonderful cast including Michael Redgrave, Michael Denison and Margaret Rutherford and the inimitable Edith Evans, with that famous exclamation from Lady Bracknell: 'A Handbag!'. Tea, coffee and home bakes will be available to all after the show. All this for £2.50! See you there.

Cinema Nairn's next film - 'The Flying Scotsman'. This Friday at Nairn Community & Arts Centre, doors open at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start.

The remarkable true story of one of our greatest ever cyclist: Graeme Obree, and how he combated mental illness and physical barriers to become a world record breaking champion. Starring the sensational Johnny Lee Miller and brilliantly supported by Scottish stars Brian Cox and Billy Boyd. A great late comer to Cinema Nairn’s 2014 programme! Then, on Monday 1st December, we will be showing the final film of the 2014 season: The Importance of Being Earnest, at 2:00pm. Everyone is welcome. We will be serving home bakes with tea and coffee at the end of the film.

Cinema Nairn Matinee - TODAY! Geordie, 2:00pm at the Community Centre.

Puny wee Geordie starts a postal body building course and ends up at the Melbourne Olympics competing in his kilt!  Based on the amazing athletic career of Tom Nicolson from Tighnabruaich, farmer and double Olympian (1908 and 1920).  Starring Bill Travers, Alastair Sim, and the fabulous Trossachs scenery.
